Prep Hawks Defeat Defending State Champion Conestoga

The St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks journeyed down I-76 to battle the Conestoga Pioneers in an attempt to snap the Pioneers’ 56-game winning streak in PIAA competition.

Conestoga looked like a power house from the moment they stepped on the field, making defensive stops and moving the ball well on offense. The game looked like it could be a lock when the Pioneers went up 8-2 in the third quarter.

However, the Hawks had other plans in mind. After they used the first two quarters to shake off the rust, the Hawks found their offensive rhythm. They found the back of the net twice by the end of the third to cut the lead to 8-4. The birds rallied again, not allowing Conestoga to score, and rocketing four goals past Conestoga net minder Rob Zonino to tie the game and send it to overtime.

In overtime, no team had the clear edge as both defenses tightened up and each goalie made some stellar saves. The first overtime ended in a stalemate, but the adrenaline and anticipation for the second OT rose dramatically where, again, the Hawks and Pioneers took the field and engaged in battle.

This time, Scott Scheuerle of the St. Joseph’s Prep Hawks snuck one past Conestoga to win the game 9-8.

Game Notes:
Scott Scheuerle scored three goals and had an assist in the 9-8 double overtime victory over the Conestoga Pioneers.
